How about this scenario. Pope Benedict never deceived anyone intentionally with the mistakes in his resignation. The Holy Spirit protected him. The violation of the cannon law barring back stage wheeling, and dealing is enough to prove Francis is not a valid Pope, thus making everything he did invalid. The Nazi's think that means the von Trapp Family is not there, but he maid only intended to say that the von Trapp family are not criminals. -- Likewise in a papal act of retirement, if evil persons think its a renunciation of office, that is their fault and error. Benedict is not obliged to disabuse them of their error.

Some say (see e.g. St Armaticus blog) that dear Pope Benedict declared a State of Emergency in the Church, which would seem to be in accord with your theory.
How can one not see the choice today, and the prophecy of Simeon being fulfilled before our eye: "A sword too your souls shallpierce, that the thoughts of many may be laid bare (revealed)." Luke 2:35.
