Pope Francis is right in evoking the prayer gathering of Assisi. This event was ground zero for the Traditionalist movement. Pope John Paul II opened Catholic Churches to non Catholic prayer leaders. A statue of Bhudda was placed on the altar and incensed. In another Church, Muslims prayed to Allah. In other Churches, same desecration took place. The Statue of our Lady of Fatima was not to be found. Not one word was mentioned by the Pope of the Fatima Peace message from heaven, that is, war is a chastisement for sin and to pray the Rosary and do penance for world peace. This scandal rocked the saintly Archbishop Lefebvre. He recognized that the Church was in a true crisis and by knowing so, he knew it was his moral imperative as a Bishop to act more boldly to perserve the Catholic priesthood which is the only source of reconciliation between sinful man and the one and only True God
I'm convinced JP-II made a big mistake with the Assissi gathering, because he opened the gates for the likes of Bergoglio and his apostasy.
