[This article was formerly titled "Blessed Brother André of Saint Joseph." With the canonization of Frere André on October 17, 2010, we have changed the name to something more fitting. The author is grateful that he had the grace to be present in St. Peter's Square when the Holy Father solemnly declared his patron a saint.]
In the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, on a rise of earth known as Mount Royal, there stands a religious edifice of staggering proportions. It is three hundred and sixty-one feet high, taller than either Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York or the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.
Its girth is so massive that it could hold within itself any one of most of the world's great shrines, including Saint Anne de Beaupré and Saint Paul of London. The cross atop its domed roof can be seen for miles around, guiding the millions of pilgrims who come there each year. It is the Oratory of Saint Joseph, a worthy tribute to him who is the head of the Holy Family and …More

Why Do Catholics Eat Fish on Friday?, by Michael P. Foley; published by Palgrave Macmillan, 2005
When I picked up this intriguingly titled paperback, I expected it to be a zippy read, informative, but light and amusing. It is informative all right, and amusing in parts, but it is anything but light. A quick read only because it is so interesting you don’t want to put it down, this little tome educates as well as entertains, informing the reader, as the book’s subtitle says, of the Catholic origin of just about everything! While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, it certainly is astounding to learn of how many words, practices, and historical developments our Catholic Faith has been responsible for, in whole or in part.
Let’s begin with the title. Just why do Catholics eat fish on Friday – or, better said, why do Catholics abstain from warm-blooded flesh meat on Friday? The obvious answer that every Catholic should know is that it is a penance imposed by the Church to commemorate …More

A Basic Introduction to the Thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas
A brief, engaging, and readable summary of the influential thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the Catholic Church's greatest minds. In this clear, thoughtful and immensely readable book, Francis Selman offers summaries on some of the most complex topics in the writing of St. Thomas Aquinas. Selman deftly draws on the work of contemporary scholars while situating Aquinas in relation to the thinkers and schools of thought he was both confronting and drawing upon. The result provides an overview that places the thought of Aquinas both in his time and in our own.

By Brother André Marie
One of the most important things for a person to have is an identity. This is why names are so important to us. Adam was given power to name things in the Garden of Eden, showing that he had dominion over the rest of creation, including Eve, whom he named. When a child finds out that a large, strange-looking animal has a name, he finds comfort in the fact, knowing that, if it has a name, and if Daddy can identify it, the thing must not be all that terrifying. It is known.
Traditional Catholics, or traditionalists, name themselves thus because of their embrace of the traditions of the Church. That they do so in the face of large-scale abandonment of those traditions by hierarchy, clergy, and faithful alike is why the name “Catholic” is not always adequate, though it should be. Beyond that very generic concept of what traditionalism is, there are manifold and disparate understandings of what exactly defines the identity of the traditionalist. Avoiding a rigid …More

Help us build a Church in honor of...
In Richmond, New Hampshire, the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary have a multifaceted apostolate called Saint Benedict Center, with monastery, convent, chapel, and school.
In our chapel, only the traditional rites of the Church (according to the “extraordinary form”) are offered. Our resident priest has been granted faculties by the Bishop of Manchester to offer Mass and hear confessions.
The present Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel is too small to accommodate our expanding numbers.
The Brothers and Sisters have been working with excellent architects and engineers to design a proper sanctuary for Our Lady’s Heart — one that can accommodate more than 200 worshippers. And because building prices have plummeted, a respected New England contractor has given us a price tag of only $750,000 for this gem. That price tag is very reasonable, given the nature of the project; it is, after all, a church building!
We need your support to build it. Can you …More

By Center Games
We know that this is not a guarantee, but when Jesus Christ walked the earth, he preached that in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, one must be childlike in the learning of one's faith. When Father Leonard Feeney, M.I.C.M., taught in the early days of Saint Benedict Center, he said that there was not a better way to learn the Catholic faith than to make a game of studying.
As part of our on-going Saint Augustine Institute of Catholic Studies, we therefore present this Not So Trivial game as an intergral part of our course of studies.
Whether young or old, we must never stop trying to learn our faith. We must always remember what the disciples were told by Christ" Go forth and teach all nations." We, as good Catholics must educate those who are outside the One True Faith.
274 trivial cards in each box. 6 Questions on each card.
