The Holy Father in Paris: religion creates ethical unity at society's roots.

Religion is essential to create an ethical consensus at the foundation of society. Benedict XVI reiterated this during his first speech in France, before President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The Pope recalled the profound historical Christian roots of the country,
and underlined the importance of a positive secularism, based on the
distinction between politics and religion which is meant to give the state the responsibility to protect its citizens’ religious freedom.
On the other hand, the irreplaceable role of religion in formation of consciences should be publicly recognized.

Benedict XVI also expressed his greatest concerns, for the young people, and the chasm between rich and poor. He asked France, which holds the presidency of the European Union , to work towards helping Europe build peace within its borders and in the whole world.
