The Polish Army saves the Basilica of Loreto * Pius XII honoruje Wojsko RP orderem Obrońców Wiary.

Parter i korytarz były pełne żołnierzy. Bomba trafiła w szkołę, zabijając 13 i raniąc 28 żołnierzy. Naoczny świadek, Rudek Kogler English translation: “It was a beautiful summer evening. As the night came along, some soldiers were sleeping in a school building, others in their tents. The 3rd Carpathian Infantry Brigade Headquarters was located inside the trucks standing near the school that were provisionally turned into the office. Suddenly, a tremendous roar of approaching German bombers was heard, which was followed by rattling machine guns while the sky got crisscrossed by the lights of the air defense searching the enemy aircrafts. It was an early dawn when the bombers returned. In rather a hurry, all gathered inside the school, which at least could protect them from the fire of the machine guns. The rooms of the first and the second floors of the building were full of soldiers when a bomb hit the school, killing 13 and wounded 28. Meanwhile, having been bombed, the main dome of the basilica was on fire and there was a common fear that the 16th century dome, a magnificent masterpiece of Sangallo embellished by Maccari’s frescoes, would collapse straight into the shrine, falling on Holy House of Our Lady. The Polish soldiers immediately started to run to its rescue in spite of danger and the ubiquitous massive gun fire all around the place. Divisional firefighters turned up on the scene with the fire engine and the ample supply of water and after hours of ultimate sacrifice they put out the fire, preventing it from spreading onto the whole of the basilica." An eye-witness, Rudek Kogler ******************************************************************************************************************************************* "It’s worth repeating that having spotted that the dome of the basilica is on fire, our soldiers spontaneously rushed up to the top with any container they had at hand, anything that could be of any use when putting out fire. All the time for a few hours, the German bullets and shells were flying madly around our heads, buzzing around our ears like mosquitoes. It’s beyond comprehension, even to us now, because not a single bullet even scratched any of us. It was simply a miracle.”, says one of the reporting. - Jan Bielatowicz w książce pt.: "Ułani Karpaccy" - Zarys Historii Pułku" English translation: “The air raid was repeated in the night between July 5 and July 6, yet that one was much more serious. The Basilica of Loreto was bombed too, which dome went on fire. The rescue of this shrine of faith and art was initiated spontaneously by the Polish soldiers despite peril and the raging combat all around. “ - An excerpt from the book by Jan Bielatowicz “Ułani Karpaccy” – Zarys Historii Pułku” ********************************************************************************************************************************************* After seven years of investigation, in A.D. 1951, Pope Pius XII officially grants the Polish Army with the title "The Protector of Our Lady" and gives high distinctions to the Polish soldiers who heroically saved The Holy House of Loreto from burning in World War II risking their own lives. ******************************************************************************************************************************************** Miej w opiece naród cały, który żyje dla twej chwały, Maryjo
