Fidelity in Sin: Speaking to the RomeLifeForum last Friday, Matthew McCusker, Deputy Director of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, referred to Amoris Laetitia when it presents the case of a second union which is – quote – “consolidated over time, with new children, proven fidelity, generous self giving, Christian commitment, a consciousness of its irregularity and of the great difficulty of going back without feeling in conscience that one would fall into new sins.” McCusker comments: “Remember that we are talking here about an adulterous union which directly violates the sixth commandment, and the words of Our Lord recorded in the gospels.”

Beneficial Adultery? Amoris Laetitia also suggests that – quote – “the good of the children suffers” if divorced and remarried people live together for the sake of the children but observe complete continence. McCusker comments: “To imply that children might suffer because their parents live chastely is clearly to suggest that it can sometimes be beneficial to children that their parents continue to commit adultery.”

Misquotes: McCusker notices that Amoris Laetitia uses quotes from Familiaris Consortio and Gaudium et Spes which speak about married couples and applies them to adulterers.

Does God Ask to Sin? According to Amoris Laetitia there can be situations that contradict Christian marriage which can yet be recognized as “what God himself is asking”. McCusker: “It would seem that the document is suggesting that there are cases, when God can be asking a person, in a particular situation, to do to something that is objectively wrong.”
