Catholic dean of students arrested: Nicholas J. deSpoelberch, the dean of students at the distinguished Catholic Regis High School on the Upper East Side in New York, was arrested last week in Connecticut. Police found him asleep in a turned-off 2005 Nissan Altima. Inside, officers discovered deSpoelberch with "glassy eyes" and in possession of multiple packages of heroin and other narcotic drugs. Regis is a tuition-free, all-boys Jesuit prep school. Mr. deSpoelberch has been suspended pending further investigation."

Too much Holy Water: Monsignor John Zuraw was shocked when he learned that St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard a diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, was sent a water bill for $93,000. Luckily, the bill turned out to be an error on the city’s part. “We must have used $93,000 in holy water,” Monsignor Zuraw joked at Mass. City officials were blaming the wrong billing on ‘software error’. A local hair salon received a bill for $11,681.00.

Apologizing for the name of God: Archbishop Joseph Marino, the Vatican's first-ever Nunzio to Malaysia, has apologised for supporting the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims. Marino issued a statement late Tuesday after having been summoned by Foreign Minister Anifah Aman. He said his comments were "never intended as an attempt to intrude into the internal affairs of the country". Anifah asked Marino to convey apologies for any misunderstandings and inconveniences that it may have caused and advised him to be mindful of the religious sensitivities of the host country. Three years ago, the High Malay Court ruled that non-Muslims are allowed to use the word to refer to God. The court case arose after the Catholic Church sued the government for banning the use of the word in its weekly newspaper. The government decided to appeal the ruling.

Catholics go Muslim: Since the September 11th tragedy, the Catholic Hispanic community in the U. S. has witnessed a significant rise in conversions to Islam especially among women says Imam Shamsi Ali an imam of the 96th street mosque in Manhattan. They are "mostly educated, young and professional women." The percentage of new female converts to Islam in the U.S. has increased 9 percent since 2000, from 32 percent to 41 percent. Latinos--men and women--accounted for 12 percent of all new converts in the United States in 2011. In 2006, the number of Hispanic Muslims was estimated at about 200,000. Over the next two decades the number of U.S. Muslims will more than double, rising from 2.6 million in 2010 to 6.2 million in 2030.
