Gold and colored glass
Fifth Sunday of Easter, May 19, 2019

Dear brothers and sisters, Pope Francis speaking to young people in Macedonia a few weeks ago recalled an anecdote that he was taught at school when he was a teenager. That is, as the first European colonizers arriving in the new world, used to exchange the precious gold of the natives with coloured glass they have brought from Europe, which for the natives were a novelty, but which in reality were worth nothing. And warning the young, he said: Beware, even today, modern ideological colonizers want to steal from you what the most precious you have, exchanging it with useless, insignificant, sometimes, devastating, novelties that are worth nothing.

Dear brothers and sisters, it is "the pure gold" of the love of God poured into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, the first gift to the believers, that Jesus deserved us with his life, death and resurrection, that the new ideological colonizers of the "single-mindedness" would like to steal from us the Christians, in exchange with the "coloured glass" of the novelties that are worth nothing, like the Gospel of Sunday, May 19th, helps us to discover.

A love that, being the greatest transformation force in the universe, makes us far more than "presumed" super men, or science fiction and non-existent super heroes, but children of God. Men and women, that is, inhabited by God, and capable, therefore, of counteracting the arrogance of the strong powers of this world and their lies with the defenseless splendor of truth: the cruelties and devastation of conflicts with the force of the dialogue and of non-violence; the cold of indifference and closure with the courage of solidarity; the tsunami of hatred with the love until to the "foolishness" of the Cross.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us not be deceived, not only must we not allow the new colonizers to steal God's love from us, but, by making more and more space in our hearts for the Holy Spirit who lives in us, we must progressively increase its "purity" because it depends on it , as the second reading will remind us, the "full immersion" in that ocean of light, life and joy that awaits us in the Heavenly Jerusalem when there will be no more tears in our eyes, nor will there be more death or mourning, neither lament nor worry, because the "first things" will have passed and we will be completely transformed in God.
