Benedict XVI at Ground Zero: Turn to Love those who are consumed by hatred.
At Ground Zero on Sunday, Benedict XVI made a pilgrimage of sorrow and reconciliation. Accompanied by the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Egan, the Pope slowly descended a long ramp in the popemobile to the deepest point of the pit. He then continued on foot to the crater left by the tragic attack of September 11, 2001, and knelt to light a candle.
With him, there were 28 individuals representing the city, the survivors, and the victims’ families. Comfort and console us, the Pope prayed, invoking the God of Love, Compassion and Healing. In the face of the enormity of this tragedy, Benedict XVI asked Wisdom and courage for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all.
