Really Enjoying Good Health? “I can affirm that consecrated life is really enjoying good health at this moment”, Archbishop Jose Rodriguez Carballo told CNA on Jan. 31. Rodriguez is the Secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Consecrated Life. His affirmation comes as a surprise as almost all Catholic religious communities are in a profound crisis. An example: From 1965 to 2013 the number of religious sisters in the U.S. has dropped from 180,000 to 51,000. These numbers are expected to drop even further.

Hollywood Covers Up Paedophilia: J. Christian Adams writes about the paedophilia allegations against Woddy Allen: “If you had only been viewing the products of Hollywood, you’d assume the Catholic Church was the only place that had a paedophilia problem.” And: “In the last decade (the time after the Catholic Church acknowledged and aggressively addressed abuses by priests) Hollywood has treated us to Deliver Us from Evil, Hand of God, Doubt, Twist of Faith (which naturally all the critics loved), Silence in the House of God, and more are coming.” But: “I couldn’t find a single documentary or film about paedophilia or silence about paedophilia among Hollywood elites, Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Kevin Clash, or anyone in the entertainment industry.”

Religious Education: Irish Catholic Schools will depart from religion classes focus exclusively on teaching the Catholic faith. A new religious education programme, being drawn up under the auspices of the Catholic bishops, allocates time for the formal study of other religions. Education Minister Ruairi Quinn sparked controversy last week when he said some of the time given to religious education would be better used on literacy and numeracy.

Appeal Rejected: Last week Scottish Father Patrick Lawson’s appeal to Rome against the decision of the bishop of Galloway to remove him from his parish has been rejected. Lawson’s crime: He has claimed to have suffered sexual advances by a parish priest when he was a seminarian in 1996. Lawыon was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2012 and now is forced to live with his elderly mother. He now will appeal to the Signatura, the highest court in Rome, and is also taking an industrial tribunal case for unfair dismissal.
