Yesterday, Pope Francis visited the Marian Shrine of Aparecida which is located two hundred kilometers from Rio de Janeiro. The event began at the Basilica of the Shrine with a prayer in the Chapel by the “Hall of the 12 Apostles” where an image of Our Lady is housed. It ended with an Act of Consecration to Our Lady of Apericida which took place at the end of the Mass celebrated in Portuguese with the local Bishops. The Holy Father had personally asked to have this trip to be added to his World Youth Day schedule.

“When the Church looks for Jesus she always knocks at her Mother’s door”, Pope Francis said in his homily in Aparecida. He continued: I too have come here to knock on the door of the house of Mary. Francis added three simple attitudes to be adopted by the faithful: to be hopeful, to allow ourselves to be surprised by God and to live joyfully.

From the 24th to the 26th of July, 250 bishops from five continents will deepen the themes of World Youth Day in three mornings of catechesis. The catechesis sessions will take place in 300 distinct locations in churches, gyms, sports camps and social centres. The majority of the sessions – 133 - will be held in Portuguese. But, there will also be 50 in Spanish, 25 in English, 15 in Italian and French, 8 in German and 5 in Polish. In total, the catechesis will be held in 20 different languages, including Arabic, Croatian, Danish, Slovenian, Greek, Czech and Russian.

From what I've seen so far, if you are expecting the best of Catholic liturgy during a World Youth Day mass, you will be disappointed and maybe alarmed – writes Jeffrey Tucker on the blog chantcafe.com. But: “If you are expecting the worst, you will be pleased at how much of the traditional forms have been retained.” Tucker continues: “In general, however, my biggest regret is how these events and their venues almost make authentic liturgy impossible, and yet, given their high status and profile, serve as a model for parishes.” Tucker believes that there was – quote lasting damage from WYD in John Paul II's time, and this event too might encourage exactly the opposite push from where we need to be going.”
