36. Ascent of Mount Carmel - Book 2, Chapter 6 – The Intellectual Faculties.

A discussion about how the three theological virtues interact with the three intellectual faculties of the soul.

St. John relies on St. Thomas and tells us that the Soul’s intellect has three faculties:

• Understanding;
• Memory; and
• Will.

Each of the theological virtues is affected by a corresponding faculty of the soul’s intellect.

• Faith (the virtue by which we believe in God) is affected by the faculty of understanding;
• Hope (the virtue by which we desire and have an expectation of the eternal life, as well as of Divine Union) is affected by the faculty of memory;
• Charity (the virtue by which we love God and our neighbor) is affected by the faculty of the will.
