fsspx.news/en – This week we look at a Ukrainian Patriarch who appeared on television to champion Catholic Social Teaching, the current deplorable attacks on Christians in Syrian by Islamists, and the new growth of an ancient Syro-Malabar liturgy.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and its Patriarch Sviatoslav, recently went on Ukrainian television to promote Catholic social teaching. Relying on Pope Leo XIII’s landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum, Patriarch Sviatoslav stated that there is an obligation for employers to pay workers just wages and that not paying a just wage is a sin that cries out to Heaven, like the murder of innocents.

A Franciscan priest has recently reported that Islamists in Syria are continuing to target Christians, particularly in the city of Damascus. While these Islamists are often presented by Western media sources as rebels fighting against the Syrian regime of Bashar el-Assad, this priest reports that the Islamists often ignore Syrian military targets choosing instead to destroy Christian churches and their surrounding neighborhoods.

After struggling simply to survive just a century ago, the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, headquartered in Kerala, India, currently enjoys remarkable stability and growth. Ongoing estimates show that Syro-Malabar Catholics have a 95% participation rate in Sunday Mass. What accounts for this vitality? Unlike the majority of Latin Catholics, the Syro-Malabar Church has been able to retain its historic liturgical rites which places a firm emphasis on sound catechesis and the importance of large families.
