Meek and merciful. During a June 21 meeting with over 100 nuncios, Pope Francis traced the characteristics he wants to see in candidates who would serve as bishops. He said they must be "pastors who are close to their people, fathers and brothers, who are meek, patient and merciful." A good prospective bishop will "love interior poverty as freedom for the Lord" and live that externally with a simple lifestyle. He won't have the "mindset of a prince." Gloria.TV comments that most bishops today are meek and weak with the powerful but impatient and merciless when dealing with faithful Catholics.

A curse of God. Yesterday, the Spanish Blog La cigüeña de la torre has published another installment of its radiography of the Spanish episcopate. About the North-Eastern region Catalonia, the capital being Barcelona, the blog writes – quote: “Catalonia is the most secularized region of Spain. There, as in the Basque Country, the union of liberalism and nationalism which has placed religion in an agonizing state – it is also under terrible bishops, who seem to be a curse from God.”

Ideology, not history. On Saturday, the Vatican L’Osservatore Romano has criticized a decision of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington to remove the name of Giovanni Palatucci, an Italian Catholic, from an exhibition because he allegedly was – quote – a “Nazi collaborator”. Palatucci saved around 5,000 Jews while being a police official in the city of Fiume, now part of Croatia. In 1945 at the age of 35, he died in the Dachau concentration camp in Germany The article in L’Osservatore Romano, written by the historian Anna Foa, criticized his removal as part of an attempt to smear the Church during the papacy of Pope Pius XII. Foa is of Jewish religion: "This is ideology and not history," she wrote.

Apostolic Visitation. As reported in the Scotsman, the Vatican has agreed to launch an apostolic visitation following allegations of sexual misconduct against Cardinal Keith O’Brien. The Apostolic Nuntio, Antonio Mennini has said to a former priest known only as Lenny, who allegedly was involved with O’Brien as a seminarian, that the Holy See decided there would be an investigation into all the allegations. Anyone affected would be able to give evidence. If it is judged that there is sufficient evidence, then the case would be subject to further investigations in Rome.
