Forgetting history is discarding the past.

According to Benedict XVI, a society that marginalizes history and emphasizes positivism and materialism forgets its roots. The Pope's statements came during a meeting with the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences in which he pointed out that excessive emphasis on contemporary history leads to a society that is ignorant of its own past and lacks a sense of historic memory. The Church must know how to respond to this challenge in so far as it desires to spread an authentic, historic culture and promote the development of the historical sciences. The Church, then, should promote the advance of a solidly Christian culture that is securely anchored on the Church, established through the centuries.
