To them the Church is not just a service provider, it is like a Mother. Franciscan Sisters in Kenya are an example to many. Despite their financial restrictions and lack of government support, they have become leaders in organizing home-based medical care, hospices and AIDS awareness educational programs, notably the successful Education for Life program. The need continues to be enormous: each day in Kenya, AIDS kills 300 people. One of the major problems created by AIDS is that it affects children, many of whom are orphaned and thereby forced to become heads of their households. Freedom of worship is guaranteed as a principle of government, but in the north citizens are subject to Shari'a Islamic law. Breaking this law can lead to corporal punishment including mutilation of limbs. But the main problem for Christians and other non-Muslims is the strict ban on apostasy. In theory, offences of this kind carry the death penalty. The problems are compounded by the vulnerability of many Christians. In Khartoum, hundreds of thousands live in displacement camps having escaped the south during the civil war of 1983-2004. Church leaders in the south also repeatedly claim that the Khartoum government is intent on Islamization. Next year is crucial for southern Sudan which is to vote on independence from Khartoum in a referendum in early 2011. Bishops are already warning of "genocide" as tension mounts. Once an affluent part of the USSR, the nation was soon to suffer deteriorating relations with Russia and the Georgian economy worsened. This economic collapse was mirrored by a moral collapse. For the Church today, Georgia is missionary territory to be explored. While the struggle against the moral and spiritual void left by communism seems near impossible, every person and every life saved means saving the whole world. Where God Weeps - Haiti. On January 12, 2010, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck Haiti claiming approximately 230,000 lives. It was the island's worst earthquake in 200 years. The epicenter, located 26 km from the capital Port au Prince, devastated the city which has 40% of the country's population. The already precarious infrastructure and Haiti's fragile government completely collapsed. The UN estimates that over three million people were affected across the country. Communications, roads and health services were damaged, access to food and drinking water was very difficult. Aid to the Church in Need traveled to Haiti a year later. Article 4 of the country's constitution declares that all laws and institutions "must be based on Islamic criteria" and although Christians are an officially recognised minority, they are treated as second class citizens. This leaves them open to abuse and they are denied many rights. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasts that the Christian minority "enjoys equal rights",but any public expression of faith or missionary action, whatever form it may take, is banned as proselytism. Christian Churches are permitted to hold services in churches and other buildings designated for the purpose but they are forbidden from expressing their faith in public. The government also underestimates the numbers of Christians in the country: official figures put the number at 79,000 however the Armenian Orthodox alone number up to 200,000 and other Christian denominations have at least 20,000 members.
