The Continuing Embarrassment of Cardinal Dolan

This column has already noted the scandalous appearance of Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, at that coven of fiends known as the Democratic National Convention. In a column for The Remnant I have remarked the scandal of Dolan's invitation to Mr. Obama to crack jokes and promote his presidential campaign at the Al Smith Dinner on October 18.

"Some have told me the invitation is a scandal," Cardinal Dolan admits. But that will not deter him. For the important thing, says he, is "civility." Oh yes, and "engagement and dialogue" as called for by — all together now! — the Second Vatican Council, whose splendiferous "renewal" of the Church is there for all to see.

But what engagement? What dialogue? At the Al Smith dinner the Cardinal will sit there like everyone else and guffaw at Obama's professionally written gag lines, without uttering a word against the President's diabolical agenda. "I am receiving stacks of mail protesting the invitation," the Cardinal admits. But it's full steam ahead! After all, what do mere rank-and-file faithful know about the important business of civility, engagement and dialogue?

As for the slaughter of the innocent unborn and the insane demands of militant homosexuals, well, those are matters to be decided in the Sacred Voting Booth. We mustn't spoil the boisterous mood at the Al Smith Dinner with petty partisan politics. Link

Being from NYC I am embarrassed how Bishop Dolan is constantly inviting Obama to events?! I talked to many NYC priests and they will not criticize his actions; even many of the lay stand by their bishop on this matter. They say things like "he's a good man", or "he knows what he is doing", or even better, "he is the Bishop I am not allowed to criticize him"! Wish this fat bishop would stop going to …More

Fr. Frank Pavone: “No doubt, the Obama campaign will use his presence at the dinner to say, ‘Look, I’m not attacking the works of the Catholic Church. On the contrary, I’ve helped raise money for them.

“Meanwhile, the actions of his Administration continue to threaten the very survival of Catholic institutions.”

Pavone said he believes in “respectful dialogue” with those with whom Priests for Life disagrees, pointing to some of his friendships with pro-abortion activists.

But, he said, “We just seek to do it in ways that minimize the chances that it will be exploited for the political gain of those on the other side of the disagreement.”

“Engage Obama respectfully, yes, but don’t use him for fundraising or let him use us by claiming credit for the fundraising.”

What kind of message does the Al Smith fiasco have on Catholics who are unclear about the abhorrence of abortion?

Might these Catholics think that if abortion was really such a 'big deal' surely the head of the USCCB would not have allowed such a man (Obama) appear at a Catholic event much less would the Cardinal Archbishop of NY be photographed with him.

To compound the travesty, we have boot-licking, in the tank for Dolan, Catholic commentators lauding the Cardinal for his “open mindedness.”

It's disgusting, hypocritical and an embarrassment to every Catholic who is serious about their faith.

If Obama supported pulling off the limbs and sucking out the brains of Dolan and his brother Bishops with our tax dollars - would the Cardinal have invited Obama for a photo-op dinner of merriment for charity? (An idea not totally without merit. ED)
