Salesians Elect New General - Who Wasn't There
Don Fabio Attard, 66, from Malta, who was not a member of the Chapter, was elected the new Rector Major and eleventh successor of Don Bosco.
He replaces Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, who is now Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for Consecrated Life.
Father Attard will lead a community of 13,750 consecrated men and women, organised in 92 inspectorates present on five continents.
As Father Attard was not one of the voters, he was contacted by telephone at the end of the first round of voting in the elections that had elected him Rector Major.
Don Attard, when asked by the President of the General Chapter, Don Stefano Martoglio, whether he would accept the post, replied as follows "If my confreres have put their trust in me, with God's grace I will do my best".
Don Attard quickly packed his bags and left for Turin that afternoon.
