Catholic University Cancels Blasphemous Play By Its Own Faculty

The Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) on Tuesday canceled a festival of its Faculty of Performing Arts. This was in response to complaints from the government, the Episcopal Conference and several political parties.

The event, called "Maria Maricón," featured a poster of a man dressed as a virgin with a sacred heart. It was scheduled for January 30 and 31. "Maricón" in Spanish means "fag".

"Faced with the questioning of the graphics of one of the works presented at the festival, we reject the misuse of religious symbols and apologize to the community and public opinion, reaffirming the Catholic principles that govern our institution, "the PUCP said in a statement.

"We communicate that the realization of the festival is suspended and that we will carry out the necessary processes with the aim of preventing situations like this from happening again," added the PUCP.
