Culture and Charity: the common ground for Jews and Christians.

It is necessary that Jews and Christians meet on the cultural level – H2onews was told by Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, a Biblical Scholar and President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, who participated in an encounter on the relations between Israel and the Holy See that took place in Rome.

"It is also absolutely crucial that we meet above all on the cultural level. Consider, for example, contemporary Jewish writers or even those of the immediate past, who have offered insights and intuitions of the world that Christians may benefit from."

The President of the Vatican Dicastery for Culture mentioned several Jewish writers that Christians can explore.

"For example, I can mention Kafka, a particularly Jewish Jew, who has many secular dimensions, but who nonetheless conveys many Christian features. I recall writers such as Agnon, Nelly Sachs, individuals such as Max Brod… There are many Jews to be explored by Christians in order to understand how they interpret our world. And I hope the same happens in the Jewish world concerning Christian culture, literature, and art.

Oded Ben-Hur, Ambassador of Israel to the Holy See, explains his country's collaboration with the Church:

"I can point out that Israel collaborates with the Church through Cor Unum in third world countries; assisting the well being of the populations that suffer in those regions; In issues concerning AIDS, the fight against the virus, hunger, clean water… we participate in these important things. We can participate in many works for the good and future of man. This is our goal."
