Already in Hospital
Monsignor Acerbi has been a Church bureaucrat all his life, entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1954.
He worked in New Zealand, the Netherlands, Colombia, Hungary and Moldova.
The high point of his career came during his time in Colombia, when on 27 February 1980 he was taken hostage, along with a dozen other diplomats and more than forty other people, when communist guerrillas belonging to the April 19 Movement attacked the Dominican Republic's embassy in Bogotá.
He was one of the last to be released in Havana on 28 April. Acerbi was allowed to preside at the daily Eucharist in captivity.
Making Acerbi a cardinal makes little sense, especially as a Christian is not interested in worldly honours that have no meaning for the kingdom of God.
