Niamey: Launch of a campaign to identify volunteers for the defence of the fatherland!

Niamey, 19 August (ANP)-A census campaign of volunteers for the defence of the homeland was launched this Saturday, 19 August 2023, at the general seyni kountché stadium in Niamey.

The aim of this operation is to take a census of Niger volunteers aged 18 and over in order to build up a database that will be passed on to the authorities.

Speaking to the press, the co-organiser of the voluntary mobilisation for the defence of the homeland, Younoussou Hima, said that "we started the census today at the stadium, and it will continue with programmes that we will set up in the communes to be closer to the people in order to contain the mass a little".

The co-organiser, Mr Hima, thanked all the Nigeriens who had come because they had shown "their love for their country and they had also shown that they were ready to defend their country".

This is also a way of saying to ECOWAS, which wants to bring us war, that this war is not the war of the military in power, but rather a war between the people of Niger and themselves.

We are ready and we will sacrifice ourselves," he said.

The co-organiser added: "Today, we mobilised more than 50,000 people in less than 2 hours. We were overwhelmed and we had to stop registration, but we will continue.

But we are telling the people," said Mr Hima, "to stay mobilised, we are going to mobilise to be with them in defence of our country".

He thanked once again all those who had come to the stadium and "all those who called us from outside, and we are here, open for the defence of our homeland" before assuring that "the census will continue with a timetable that we will communicate very soon with well-organised structures or we will try to frame things so that we cannot be overwhelmed" concluded the co-organiser, Mr Younoussou Hima.

I came to take the census to defend our country, and everyone you see here has come to take the census like me, and it's not for money, it's just to defend our homeland," said Aboubacar Sidikou, a young man he met on the spot.

Another young man, Souleymane Issa, told us that he had "come to the stadium to be registered, to be among the soldiers defending our country, and also to defend the honour of all citizens, and I am ready to defend our country".

Prior to this census of volunteers for the defence of the homeland, several socio-professional organisations and the population mobilised to lend their support to Niger's new military authorities.
