On the Same Day: Two Churches Attacked in France

The tabernacle of the church of Notre-Dame in Vire, Normandy, France, was broken into on Sunday 27 October.

Several items were stolen, including consecrated hosts and ciboria. The Bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux, Jacques Habert, said in a statement that "the social climate in which we live means that we are witnessing an increase in violence against people and property".

Also on Sunday, at around 3.30pm, passers-by entering the church of Saint-Gilles in Chamalières-sur-Loire (diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay) saw a thick cloud of smoke.

About a dozen hymnals and candles were partially burnt. A box of matches was found near the fire.

Video surveillance cameras will be installed in the church in two months' time. The gendarmes have opened an investigation.
