The Latter Times & the Judgment of Nations Margaret C. Galitzin
---
Recently I came across a small book titled The Latter Times [Los Ultimos Tiempos] by a Spanish Doctor of Sacred Scripture, Fr. Benjamin Sanchez, born in 1905. (1) This short work, which examines public and private prophecies about the Latter Times, is quite interesting and significant for our days. This is particularly so because many Catholics, overwhelmed by the apostasy and sin of our days, are wrongly thinking that we are in the End Times that will immediately precede the Last Judgment. --- A renewed world, not the latter times
--- A Great Chastisement will come over the earth, Zacharias foresees, where only a third part will be left. These, however, will be tried and purified and will call on the name of the Lord: ---
“And there shall be in all the earth, saith the Lord, two parts in it shall be scattered and shall perish: but the third part shall be left therein. ---
“And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined: and I will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say: Thou art my people: and they shall say: The Lord is my God.” (13:8-9) ---
This should suffice to demonstrate that the universal Judgment of Nation, which will be something all will see and experience, is not the Final Judgment, which will be at the end of the world. ---
In general, the Scriptures and private prophecies that Fr. Sanchez sets out warn us of a great chastisement that will come over all humanity – a Judgment of Nations – to be followed by a long period of peace and universal well-being. When he uses the expression Latter Times, he emphasizes that it does not refer to the end of the world created by God. In the great universal catastrophe that is coming, the world will not be completely annihilated. ---
In the era that will follow, Fr. Sanchez notes, “Christ will reign from one end of the world to the other, and all His enemies will fall at his feet (1 Cor 15:25) to render Him their vassalage. His Church will be gloriously triumphant throughout the earth. (2)

The End Times or Final Judgment, will take place only after that period of God’s triumph on earth. The great chastisement and purification of the world should not be confused with the Final Judgment, Fr. Sanchez emphasizes, for Scriptures tells us that not even the Angels of Heaven know the day or the time of the latter.
Interesting AI research analysis -- Introduction to the Article and Its Context Margaret C. Galitzin’s reflection on Fr. Benjamin Sanchez’s work The Latter Times addresses a growing concern among Catholics: the belief that we are currently in the End Times immediately preceding the Final Judgment. Fr. Sanchez, a Doctor of Sacred Scripture, analyzes both public revelation (Scripture) and private prophecies to clarify this confusion. The article emphasizes that the current signs of apostasy, moral decay, and global unrest—while serious—are not necessarily indicators of the immediate approach of the Last Judgment. Instead, they may point to a Great Chastisement, a Judgment of Nations, which will purify the world but not end it. traditioninaction.org › religious › g010_Judg-1.htm The Latter Times & the Judgment of Nations by Margaret Galitzin Benjamin Sanchez, set out proofs from Scripture that the latter times is distinct form the end times, and will include a great chastisement, or judgement of nations, followed by a period of peace or Reign of Christ through Mary, which will end with the end times, or Final judgement traditioninaction.org › religious › g011_Judg-2.htm The Latter Times: The Conversion of the Jews & Anguished Times ... Older prophecies–some dating to Patristic times–are transmitted to mass audiences as discrete paragraphs strung and restrung like so many beads in twentieth century collections by Gerald Culleton, Edward Connor, Leonard Kramer, Yves Dupont, Benjamin Martin Sanchez, Desmond Birch, and others. The Judgment of Nations vs. the Final Judgment Fr. Sanchez makes a crucial distinction between two eschatological events: • Judgment of Nations: A global, visible chastisement that will affect all humanity, resulting in the destruction of two-thirds of the world’s population (Zech 13:8–9). This is a purifying event, not the end of the world. • Final Judgment (Last Judgment): The ultimate judgment at the end of time, when Christ returns, the dead are resurrected, and eternal destinies are publicly revealed. The Judgment of Nations precedes a long period of peace; the Final Judgment ends history. newadvent.org › cathen › 08552a.htm CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: General Judgment (Last Judgment) Theologians usually enumerate the following nine events as signs of the last judgment: Concerning this sign the Saviour says: "And this gospel of the kingdom, shall be preached in the whole world, for a testimony to all nations, and then shall the consummation come" (Matthew 24:14). catholic.com › magazine › online-edition › why-are-there-two-judgments God Will Judge You Twice | Catholic Answers Magazine November 6, 2025 - . . . Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. . . . And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matt. 25:31, 32, 46). 3. As odd as it may sound our inquirer, it is fitting that there be a final judgment after the particular judgment for three essential reasons. Biblical Basis for the Two Judgments 1. Zechariah 13:8–9 – The Third Part Preserved “And there shall be in all the earth… two parts… shall perish: but the third part shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined…” This prophecy describes a global purification, not annihilation. The remnant is tested and sanctified, calling on God, who acknowledges them: “Thou art my people.” This aligns with Catholic teaching on purgation before glory. 2. 1 Corinthians 15:25 – Christ’s Reign “For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.” This supports the idea of a millennial-like reign of Christ on earth, where His Church triumphs after a great trial. While the Catholic Church does not dogmatically define a literal thousand-year reign (as in some Protestant views), it allows for a period of peace and triumph before the final apostasy and Last Judgment. bible.com › bible › 114 › ZEC.13.8-9.NKJV Zechariah 13:8-9 (NKJV) - And it shall come to pass in all th | ... The Great Chastisement is not a new idea in Catholic tradition. It appears in: • Private revelations (e.g., Our Lady of La Salette, Our Lady of Fatima) • Church-approved prophecies warning of divine punishment for sin, especially apostasy and moral collapse • Scriptural patterns (e.g., the Flood, Sodom, Babylon) The purpose is not destruction, but conversion and purification. As Hebrews 12:6 says: “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” This chastisement is universal, affecting all nations, hence the term Judgment of Nations. October 18, 2025 The Reign of Christ and the Era of Peace Fr. Sanchez envisions a future where: • Christ reigns visibly through His Church • Enemies are subdued (1 Cor 15:25) • Peace and justice prevail This echoes the Messianic Kingdom foretold in Isaiah 2:4: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” While the Catholic Church does not define the exact form of this era, it is open to the possibility of a period of grace and triumph before the final trial. Catholic Eschatology and Tradition Catholic teaching on the Last Things (eschatology) includes: 1. Particular Judgment – At death, each soul is judged by Christ (2 Cor 5:10) 2. Final Judgment – At the end of time, all are judged publicly (Matt 25:31–46) 3. Resurrection of the Body – The dead will rise (John 6:40) 4. New Heaven and New Earth – God will dwell with man (Rev 21:1–4) The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1038–1044) confirms: “The reign of Christ will come in glory after a final trial that will shake the faith of many.” Conclusion: Clarifying the Latter Times Fr. Sanchez’s work, as reflected by Galitzin, serves as a corrective to fatalistic interpretations of current events. The Latter Times are not synonymous with the End of the World. Instead, they include: • A Great Chastisement (Judgment of Nations) • A Purified Remnant • A Period of Peace and Christ’s Triumph • A Final Apostasy and Last Judgment Christians are called to watch, pray, and remain faithful, not to fear that every crisis is the end. As Jesus said: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (Matt 24:36) Analysis of "The Triumph, The Second Coming and The Eucharistic Reign" by Fr. I like your post. I think we are in the time where satan is unbound (Rev. Chap. 20) because Pope Leo 13th had the mystical experience in 1884 where satan asked to try the Church and God permitted it. I think the next step would be the Second Coming of Christ.
Many Church approved mystics talked about this. The available graces have to be used first. Matthew 24:14 states: "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and THEN the end will come."
