We Must Fast to do Reparation.

The situation regarding Lent today is more relaxed now than ever before in the history of Holy Church. Those pagans of old known as the Ninevites listened to the preaching of Jonas and did penance. They fasted completely from all food and drink. They wore sackcloth and ashes in reparation for offenses against the Most High God with even their domestic beasts joining in the penance. These pagans were spared punishment and calamities. These Ninevites would have every right to rise up and condemn us for our failure to do penance for our sins and make reparation for the sins of our nation. The great Abbot of Solesmes and liturgical expert, Dom Gueranger, said that the ever-growing spirit of lack of mortification, a general effeminacy of character, which will lead, at last, to frightful social disorders…Those nations, among whose people the spirit and practice of penance are extinct, are heaping against themselves the wrath of God, and provoking His justice to destroy them by one or another of these scourges – civil disorder, or conquest. But then the holy abbot adds that if our ease-loving and sensual generation were to repent, like the Ninevites of old, with acts of penance…with fastings and abstinence…who knows but that the arm of God, which is already raised to strike us, may give us blessing and not chastisement?
