Francis in Hospital: "....Then I Go Straight to Heaven"
On Wednesday evening, the Vatican spokesman announced slight improvements in his blood levels. Several Vatican journalists reported on Wednesday that Francis is occasionally sitting in an armchair, breathing on his own and that his heart is holding up well.
Italian Curia Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, speaking Thursday on Italian national radio station RTL 102.5, called Francis' health "complex but not critical."
He didn't rule out the unlikely idea that Francis might resign: "If he were in a situation where his ability to have direct contact with people was severely limited, then I believe he could decide to resign.
Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline of Marseille told journalists on Thursday that Francis is one of those people who only rests when he is in the hospital. He also didn't rule out a resignation either: "Anything is possible!"
The day after Francis’ received the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday, Corriere.it reported on the meeting.
Francis was more out of breath than usual, but joked. He said [again] that there were people praying for his death, but "the Lord" had decided to leave him here: "The doctors have told me that if I do not take care of my health, I will go straight to heaven."
Meloni had been asked by Francis' staff not to give interviews or statements to journalists about the meeting and Francis' health.
