Spain: Small Village Erects Monumental Statue of Christ

The idea to erect the sculpture arose around 15 years ago during the tenure of the former parish priest, Don Enrique Rodríguez Torrejón who later left to become a missionary in the Peruvian prelature of Moyobamba, where he still resides.

He managed to motivate the 500 residents of La Nava de Ricomalillo, a municipality in the province of Toledo in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha in Spain. They began collecting donations to reach the €45,000 they needed.

The site chosen for the sculpture was a dilapidated tower on the hill of Mogorro. The tower had to be restored, and a huge concrete cylinder was built inside to support the colossal sculpture, which weighs 35 tonnes and is nearly 8 metres high.

The sculpture was in the making for several years and was stored on a plot of land in the village while they waited for the restoration of the tower and the administrative permits.

To transport it through the winding streets of the village to its new location, the sculpture had to be divided into two parts. Last December, it took three cranes, tractors and trucks, as well as five hours of intense work, to accomplish this feat.

The driving force behind the project was Don Héctor J. Rodríguez de Rivera, the current parish priest of La Nava de Ricomalillo and a priest from the Canary Islands.

This Saturday, the Archbishop of Toledo, Monsignor Francisco Cerro Chaves, will bless the statue.
