Austria May Elect Europe’s First Modern Far-Right Candidate.
wochit on May 22, 2016 The United States is not the only country embroiled in the resurgence of the extremist, far right. After counting ended Sunday May 22nd 2016, Austria’s presidential election was too close to call. However, the anti-immigration Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer appeared to hold a slight lead. Hofer wrote the Freedom Party's manifesto, which defined the “identity” of native Austrians. Hofer is very pro-gun, stating that he encourages gun ownership in Austria “given current uncertainties”. Similar to Trump in USA, Hofer appeals to white working-class voters without college educations.This might mark the first time a far right politician is elected in Europe since WWII
