Historic Church In Mexico City Becomes Migrant Camp
The church of Santa Cruz y la Soledad in the heart of Mexico City, the seventh oldest Catholic church in all of Mexico, is currently being inhabited by nearly 1,000 immigrants on their way to the United States (La-Croix.com, 3 January).

The original church was built by Augustinian monks in the 16th century. Now, inside the church, the pews have been pushed up against the stone walls.

Hundreds of mattresses are waiting to be used for the night. Volunteers hand out clothes while children play under the nave. In one corner, doctors from a public clinic have set up a medical office.

The Mexican parliament and the cathedral are just a few streets away.
