Finally Freed: Indian Nuns Released from Jail on Bail

On 2 August, a special court in Bilaspur granted bail to the Kerala nuns, who had been arrested on 25 July on charges of "human trafficking" and "forced religious conversion" in Chhattisgarh. The nuns are Sisters Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis.

The conditions include surrendering their passports, paying a ₹50,000 bond each, not leaving the country and not influencing witnesses.

Their arrest sparked a political storm, with Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi accusing the regime of targeting the nuns for their faith.

Speaking to India Today TV, family members refuted the forced conversion charge. One of the women's elder sisters said: 'Our parents are no longer alive. I sent my sister to work with the nuns in Agra as a nurse. I worked with them earlier in Lucknow. This opportunity would help her become self-reliant".
