The Carthusians Are Also Struggling

Due to the harshness of the rule of Saint Bruno, the Carthusians have always been a minority among religious orders. They reached their peak in 1967 with 602 members.

However, as of 1 January 2013, there were only 304 remaining, although this was not due to secularisation comparable to that experienced by other religious communities after the Second Vatican Council. However, the Carthusians also tinkered with the liturgy.

By 1 January 2021, the number of Carthusians had fallen to 275, but by 1 January 2022, it had increased by five monks to 280.

However, the numbers then started to fall again: to 276 in 2023 and 272 in 2024.
