Ghanaian Bishops Support Law Against Homosexual Acts

Ghana's bishops have called on the country's new president, John Dramani Mahama, 66, to push for the passage of a law promoting and protecting family values.

"We want this to become law," said Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of Sunyani, president of the Bishops' Conference of Ghana, at a meeting on 14 January.

The bishops' central proposal revolves around the 'Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill'.

The legislation seeks to reaffirm African family values, particularly through the education system.

It provides for prison sentences of up to three years for those found guilty of homosexual acts and up to five years for those found guilty of homosexual propaganda.

Parliament passed the bill on 28 February 2024, but its implementation was put on hold while the then president, Nana Akufo-Addo, awaited two Supreme Court rulings on its constitutionality.

President Mahama, who was inaugurated on 7 January 2025, has claimed that the failure to pass the bill before the end of the parliamentary term has rendered it null and void: "This bill is effectively dead," he said.

During his previous term (2012-20117), Mahama, a member of the Assemblies of God, had the support of pro-homosex regimes including the United States, Great Britain and France.
