The first Catholic-Muslim Symposium begins today.

The first symposium organized by the Catholic-Muslim Forum founded by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in cooperation with Muslim officials began today and will last until Thursday. The event follows the open letter addressed by 138 officials from the Muslim world on October 13, 2007 to Pope Benedict XVI and to the heads of other churches and ecclesial communities, and also the answer that was given on November 19, 2007 by the Vatican Secretary of State on behalf of the Pope. The symposium is centered on "the love of God and love of neighbor." On Thursday, Pope Benedict XVI will meet the participants in the symposium, and in the afternoon of the same day, a meeting will be held at the Pontifical Gregorian University during which a joint declaration will be announced at the conclusion of the symposium. The participants in the meeting are 29 people from each side, among them experts, religious authorities and advisers.
