Leo XIV on Middle East War: "A Tragedy of Enormous Proportions" Looms

At the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, Leo XIV voiced deep concern over the escalating violence involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. He warned that the situation could lead to “a tragedy of enormous proportions” if hostilities continue.

“Stability and peace are not built through mutual threats, nor through weapons,” Leo XIV said, stressing that only “reasonable, authentic, and responsible dialogue” can bring lasting peace.

He urged all parties to assume their moral responsibility and halt the spiral of violence before it becomes an “irreparable abyss”. Calling for diplomacy to regain its central role, he emphasized the need to promote justice and peaceful coexistence.
