Leo XIV Appoints Don Marco Billeri as Papal Secretary

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Don Marco Billeri, a priest from the Diocese of San Miniato, as his second personal secretary.

The announcement was made by Bishop Giovanni Paccosi of San Miniato. He told ToscanaOggi.it on September 27 that Leo XIV had personally informed him over the telephone on Wednesday. "I felt joy and vertigo," the Bishop said.

Born in Pontedera, in the province of Pisa in Tuscany, in 1984, Don Marco Billeri was ordained a priest in 2016.

He obtained a doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. His doctoral thesis dealt with conflicts between associations of lay faithful and ecclesiastical authority, suggesting that the latter can intervene with a commissioner.

Don Billeri has served as the bishop’s ceremonialist for the Diocese of San Miniato and as Secretary of the Presbyteral Council. He has also held various roles at the Church Tribunal of San Miniato, including Judge.

With this nomination, Pope Leo XIV continues to appoint priests with a background in canon law to positions of trust.

The first secretary is Rev. Edgar Iván Rimaycuna Inga from Chiclayo in Peru.
