Matterhorn - 2013. Synopsis of the film Matterhorn
Every day, at precisely six o'clock in the evening, after prayer, fifty-year-old widower Fred (Ton Kas) sits down to a dinner of three potatoes, beans, and sausage. Both the arrangement of the vegetables on his plate and every movement toward their consumption are fully controlled and time-honoured by this rigid, practising Calvinist. The Dutch town in which he lives seems to have been created perfectly for him as well; the sidewalks are meticulously cleaned, the hedges trimmed, the poplars grow in rows, and on Sundays, its residents march politely to church. It is a plain dominated by a haughty faith and the punishing word of God personified in the form of the local pastor. Fred himself is like the titular Matterhorn: menacing and icy in contact with other people. However, this is not a film about a Dutch idyll.
The peaceful world of a lonely widower's home is shattered when a poor wanderer, Theo (René van 't Hof), arrives. Like a good Samaritan, Fred gives him gardening work and takes him in. The insubordinate, slightly retarded Theo unscrupulously disturbs the peace of the household. He begins with dinner, which he crushes and mixes on his plate, then, with equal determination, moves into Fred's life. Although Theo speaks little, he can imitate animal calls brilliantly and enjoys dressing up in Fred's deceased wife's dresses... A bond begins to form between the two men, stronger than the parishioners might like. Someone writes "Sodom and Gomorrah" on the wall of Fred's house, and his friends begin to look the other way. The previously friendly neighbourhood turns out to be a swamp that threatens to swallow Fred and Theo whole...

Codziennie, dokładnie o szóstej wieczorem, po modlitwie, pięćdziesięcioletni wdowiec Fred (Ton Kas) zasiada do kolacji złożonej z trzech ziemniaków, fasolki i kiełbasy. Zarówno układ warzyw na talerzu jak i każdy ruch służący ich spożyciu jest w pełni kontrolowany i uświęcony tradycją przez tego sztywnego praktykującego kalwina. Holenderskie miasteczko, w którym żyje, jest również stworzone jakby idealnie dla niego; chodniki są dokładnie wysprzątane, żywopłoty przystrzyżone, topole rosną w rzędach a w niedzielę jego mieszkańcy grzecznie maszerują do kościoła. To równina, nad którą góruje wyniosła wiara i karzące słowo boże uosobione w postaci miejscowego pastora. Sam Fred jest niczym tytułowy Matterhorn: groźny, i lodowaty w kontakcie z innymi ludźmi. Jednak nie jest to film o holenderskiej sielance.
Spokojny świat domu samotnego wdowca znika, gdy trafia do niego biedny wędrowiec Theo (René van 't Hof). Fred niczym dobry Samarytanin daje mu pracę w ogrodzie i przyjmuje pod swój dach. Niesubordynowany, lekko opóźniony Theo bez skrupułów zaburza spokój domu. Zaczyna od kolacji, którą całą rozgniata i miesza na talerzu, później z równą konsekwencją przechodzi do życia Freda. Choć Theo mało mówi, potrafi świetnie naśladować głosy zwierząt i lubi przebierać się w sukienki zmarłej żony Freda... Pomiędzy dwoma mężczyznami zaczyna zawiązywać się więź silniejsza, niż mogłoby się to podobać parafianom. Ktoś pisze na ścianie domu Freda "Sodoma i Gomora", przyjaciele zaczynają odwracać wzrok. Dotychczas przyjazna okolica okazuje się bagnem, które może pochłonąć Freda i Theo...
