President of the Centre for Child Protection Speaks On The Regensburg Choir School Scandal.

saltandlighttv on Jul 20, 2017 A new report about abuse at a prestigious choir-school in Germany is an “Important step forward”, said Fr. Hans Zollner, who is the President of the Centre for Child Protection of the Pontifical Gregorian University, and a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

According to Vatican Radio, an investigation, commissioned by the Diocese of Regensburg into abuse allegations at the Regensburg choir school, found that at least 547 former students, were victims to some form of abuse, between the years of 1945 to the early 1990’s, and 67 students were victims of sexual violence.

In an interview with Vatican Radio, Fr Zollner said the 440-page report shows that Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer of Regensburg took all the allegations seriously, and didn’t shy away from the consequences of the scandal. He has done something that will at least bring the hope of justice for the abused. It will also give institutions the opportunity to review their procedures with regard to screening personnel, and to better respond to allegations of abuse.

Father Zollner noted that the report on the scandal is not the first time the Church has investigated abuse within its own ranks, referring to a similar independent report on abuse in the Archdiocese of Munich in 2010.

In just under two months, the Pope will embark yet again, on another Apostolic Journey to Colombia. I’ll bring you details of the trip closer to the date but yesterday, the President of the Catholic Bishops conference of Colombia, Bishop Oscar Ortega, issued a statement to mark their 207th anniversary of independence and peace.

"It’s been 207 years, for the fight of independence and I want to greet the Colombian nation and invite all Colombians to UNITE under the sign of our flag and through our prayers and beliefs, especially as believers of forgiveness and peace for our nation. For 207 years, there were Colombians who were promised freedom and liberation of our nation. Today, as Colombians at this historical moment, let us commit and reconcile with God, our brothers and creation."

Colombia celebrates July 20th as the beginning of a series of historical events that triggered the country's Independence.

Last week, I brought you the story of the big kick-off event of the very popular Theology-On-Tap that happens weekly in Chicago - an event that brings young adults to bars and pubs in Chicago to talk theology over drafts. Footage of that event was just released by the Archdiocese of Chicago where Salt and Light’s very own Fr.Thomas Rosica, along with America Magazine's Michael O'Loughlin discussed the appeal of Pope Francis to over 600 young adults, over beer and snacks. Have a look.

There are other Theology-on-tap events scheduled weekly throughout Chicago, so if you would like to get in on the action, you can visit their site: tot.chicago.org for details.

That's all for today. Join us again on Monday, when I bring you more news and stories from a Perspectives of a Catholic Lens.
