Mr. Crowley's comment is almost certainly true if we (wrongly) pre-suppose he is referring to only Northern European peasants (as implied by his medieval painting). However, that isn't what he wrote. He wrote "a peasant in the 1400s" and that also includes Latin American peasants. Since few historically documented recipes have survived from 1400s Spain and Latin America, it's impossible for him to prove his claim and the burden of proof is on him.

I can, with absolute certainty, say it's possible to make nachos at home that have "more extreme nacho flavor" than any flavor of Dorito on the market today.
