Ecological or Spiritual Conversion.

2nd Sunday of Advent: Environmentalism seems to be the new religion of the modern world. Ecological high priests speak of a golden age... an Eden like paradise of the past... where man was not one with God, but rather one with nature. But then it happened, namely, the original act of polluting. As the author, Michael Crichton, stated: we are now all energy sinners and salvation can only be obtained through sustainability. In such a religion, the liturgical color is always green. Recycling becomes a corporal work of mercy. So called martyrs lay down their lives for the sake of trees. Apocalyptic doomsday prophecies warn of environmental collapse and many pray for a killer plague to eliminate most of the human race in order to recapture sustainability.
But let’s face facts...the religion of environmentalism is nothing but a rehashing of the pagan pantheism of old where nature is god and trees and forests become religious temples and cathedrals. We are not so much in need of an ecological conversion, but rather a real spiritual conversion especially as we begin a new Church year with this Advent Season. During the four weeks of Advent, Jesus knocks at the door of the hearts of men in a more aggressive manner. He desires a place in men’s hearts. By His spiritual birth in our souls...by His laying in the manger of our hearts...the Son of God gives to the good a more abundant life, while He rescues the sinner from eternal death and hell-fire. During this Advent Season, we can obey the prophets Isaiah and St. John the Baptist, by preparing the way for the spiritual coming of Christ.
