Government proposal to break the seal of confession is without precedent

(gloria.tv/The Irish Catholic) 7 July 2011

The Minister for Justice and the Minister for Children are all indicating that a proposed new law will require priests to break the seal of confession if someone confesses to them the crime of paedophilia.
This would make us the one and only country in the Western world to have such a law. Even Revolutionary France in the days of its worst violence against the Church did not pass a law requiring the breaking of the seal of confession.

The justification for the law is that the crime of paedophilia is so heinous that no one who hears about it, under whatever circumstances, can be allowed to keep it to themselves.

In creating a legal requirement that priests break the seal of confession under certain circumstances, the Irish State is going down a road very few other states in history have gone down. We need to seriously reconsider this extremely unwise and unprecedented proposal.

Additionally, France may require the breaking of the seal when a confession of child abuse is made.

And what about the Sin of murder, or rape, or mandatory 'gay history' classes for the youth.
Yet the 'law' says it is legal to murder the unborn life within its Mother's womb. They talk about the issue of "Separation of Church and State", only when it fits into their agenda. Hypocrites...

A delicate issue, to be sure! However, weighing the merits of the seal of the confessional against the merits of protecting the lives and minds of the helpless children, one easily sees the good that this new law would do. On the other hand, is this a wedge which might open up the confessional (fully) to temporal law? Who then, would trust the priest and the sacrament of reconciliation? Hummmmm...... 🧐
