Bl. Sebastien de Jesus, lay brother, religious of the Franciscan 1st Order.

A Spanish Francisan whose reputation for sanctity resulted in Charles III of Spain requesting fhis beatification. Interrupted by the death of the King, the process remained unfinished many years, until it finally ended favorably.
Born to a poor and pious peasant family, Sebastián Aparicio (his real name) learned on his own to read and write before he became an orphan. He went to live with his uncle where he learned the rudiments of painting. At the age of 16 he became a spinner of silk, trade that he worked at for 5 years until on he entered convent of Franciscans of Ecija as a novice.
A year later he was put in charge of the collection of alm. He lived in a high degree of sanctity. He was a skilled Goldsmith, and produced crucifixes that were reputed to have miraculous qualities. He was sent to Seville and lived in residence of the Court of Carlos III, still infant, this met the famous clergyman, and was impressed by the humility of the same. A letter written by Cardinal de Solís, Archbishop of Seville, told of how Carlos III, before embarking on a trip to Italy received a visit from the Sebastian, who warned him of the danger of a storm on the journey and handed him a crucifix to protect him. Although the storm indeed ensued, Carlos chose to ride out the storm , throwing the crucifix into the sea as he had been previously instructed to do so by Sebastian.
On October 2, 1743 Sebastian became seriously ill, and died 13 days later. In deathbed he received the visit of numerous faithful and several painters, who portrayed him. Great numbers of people attended his funeral at the Church of Veracruz.
By a Royal order of 1771 the process of beatification began , in which 53 people testified giving witness to the sanctity of Brother Sebastian. - (from) SSA Solo Community. Translated from Portuguese.
