Catholic penitents mark Maundy Thursday with flagellation.

AP on Jul 31, 2015 Catholic Filipinos began a three-day ritual on Maundy Thursday to recall and honour the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross.
In several cities and provinces around the country, people gathered in the streets and beat themselves with sharp objects.
Many had blood streaming from body wounds inflicted with broken glass and razor blades.

As well as self-flagellation, devotees walked the streets barefoot, wearing crowns of thorns.
In Mandaluyong, a municipality of Metro Manila, a group of Catholic faithful enacted scenes from the Bible of Christ's last few hours before he was crucified.
Men dressed as Roman soldiers whipped a man representing Jesus carrying a cross through the streets.
