SULAIMANI — The international coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) said on Friday (August 19) four teenage girls playing volleyball were killed the previous day in a drone strike at a United Nations educational center in Hasaka governorate in Syria.
The Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, Maj. Gen. John Brennan, condemned the attack, stating, "Such acts are contrary to the laws of armed conflict, which require the protection of civilians.”
North Press Agency said the center was located in the village of Shmouka near a coalition base between Tel Tamir and Hasaka city, and noted the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) had issued a statement announcing the Turkish military had escalated its military activity in Rojava,
The AANES statement also reported 11 other girls were wounded in the drone attack, North Press said.
Operation Inherent Resolve has asked for a "de-escalation from all parties” in a statement posted to Twitter on Friday. "The increase in military hostilities in northern Syria is creating chaos in a fragile region where the threat of ISIS remains present,” the coalition announced.
