Benedict XVI: God wishes to win us over us with love.

We must wake up in order for the message of salvation to come to us. We must come out of the selfishness “that imprisons us to the interests and desires that oppose the truth and separates us from one another.” These were Benedict XVI’s words during the homily of Midnight Mass, during which he recalled that today the world’s mentality and the “variety of our diverse experiences” reduces our sensibility for God.

And yet the expectation for God and the capacity to find Him, Benedict XVI said, is present in each soul. The majority of people, the Pope continued, do not consider the questions about God a priority, when in fact God is the absolute most important reality of our lives.

We must therefore learn from the shepherds “to not let ourselves be crushed by all the urgent things of our daily life” and to find “the way out of the muddle of our thoughts and commitments” so as to discover the way to Jesus Christ as simple and humble souls that live very close to the Lord. It is God who, in Christ, comes to our encounter, the One who becomes a baby, who allows Himself to be touched and asks for our love, saying “come see how much I love you.”
