MALTA-Zejtun Olive Fest 2010 (Part 2 of 2)

Sharing with you two videos (Part 1 & 2) showing some of the activities that we attended to at the Żejtun Olive Fest 2010 known as Żejt Iż-Żejtun.

Żejtun marked the start of the traditional olive-picking season with Żejt iż-Żejtun, a weekend of cultural activities focused on the pressing of olives.

Żejt Iż-Żejtun was held from 25th to 27th September to mark the olive picking season. Array of cultural activities including olive pressing for oil were held.

The event started with a defile' delivering the olive harvest, including the reading of the 'Bandu' and the blessing of the olives prior to pressing followed by a defile delivering the olive harvest by farmers on carts..

Drummers and flag bearers in medieval costumes, folkloristic groups were among the interesting programmes. Agricultural tools, typical agricultural products and folk art were exhibited in the ambience of an old country village and fair. A dramatic re enactment of the villagers who fought the French invasion (18th century) in their village was brought to life.

Maltese ftajjar and bread dressed in freshly pressed olive oil were distributed for free tasting. Olive trees and associated products were on sale. An audio visual presentation featuring olive tree varieties and their proper cultivation was part of the event.

The Church belfries and the Crypt of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Parish Church of St. Catherine were opened for public viewing. Traditional blessing of horses, cattle and pets followed by planting of live trees by children who were confirmed this year were organized by the Parish.

The event was organized by the Local Council and supported by the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue, the MTA and the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, the festival included exhibitions of traditional crafts and free tasting of bread dipped in fresh olive oil.
