Pope Francis in Sancta Marta: 24-Hour Care
He will continue to take medication for a long time to come, as well as full-time motor and respiratory physiotherapy, and has been advised to avoid meetings, both individual and group.
The Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State guarantees 24-hour assistance to meet his needs, starting with oxygen, and immediate intervention in case of emergency.
A medical team is always with Francis.
Oxygen is administered in the same way as during the last days of his hospitalisation: high-flow oxygen at night through nasal cannulae, which continues during the day, but with a gradual reduction.
Francis is able to go to the chapel on the second floor of Santa Marta to co-preside at the Novus Ordo Eucharist.
There is no indication of the programme for the next few days, let alone the future programme for the celebration of the various Jubilees and the rites of Holy Week.
In these two days, Francis has seen only his closest collaborators. As for the planned visits of Heads of State and Government, there are no forecasts. King Charles of England has postponed his visit to the Vatican.
The most dangerous phase of the illness has passed and the main infections have been overcome.
Sergio Alfieri, one of Francis' doctors, stressed that Francis had risked his life because of two crises. In an interview with Corriere.it, he said that the worst moment was the afternoon of 28 February, when Francis' condition deteriorated due to the bronchospasm crisis.
"We had to decide whether to stop and let him go, or to go ahead and try all kinds of medicines and therapies, with a very high risk of damaging other organs. And in the end we took that path," said Alfieri.
"From day one, he asked us to tell him the truth, and he wanted us to tell him the truth about his condition."
