Murder of Six Jesuits: Arrest Warrant for Former President

An El Salvador court ordered the arrest of former president Alfredo Cristiani, 74 (Rtve.es, March 11).

The Georgetown educated businessman became involved with the US-sponsored Nationalist Republican Alliance which was fighting the Soviet supported Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front.

Cristiani was president from 1989-1994, ending the Salvadoran Civil War in 1992.

He is accused of the 1989 murders of six Jesuits and the caretaker's wife and daughter, 16, at the Jesuit Central American University in San Salvador. Declassified documents showed that the CIA knew of the government's plans to murder the Jesuits.

The whereabouts of Cristiani are currently unknown.
