This post is for my fellow Filipinos who love our Catholic traditions. Let us talk about one of the most beautiful customs we have during Advent. Simbang Gabi, the Misa de Aguinaldo. These dawn Masses are not just cultural events. They are a real Catholic treasure. For those who might not know, Simbang Gabi is a nine day novena of dawn Masses in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It starts at dawn on December 16 and leads us right up to the dawn of December 24. In the traditional Roman Rite this practice comes from the ancient Rorate Caeli Masses. These were candlelit Marian Masses prayed before sunrise. The church is dark, the candles are glowing, and the priest begins with the words of Isaiah calling for the heavens to drop down the dew of the Savior. That is the real origin of Simbang Gabi.
Now as we get ready to begin these nine days, we need to get something straight. Simbang Gabi is not a Catholic version of a wish spell. It is not a superstition. It is not a guarantee that if you finish all nine days you will magically receive whatever desire you wrote down in your heart. The Church has never taught that completing nine Masses obligates God to fulfill your wishlist. That idea is not Catholic. It is simply not what the Mass is.
These nine dawn Masses are supposed to prepare the soul for the coming of the Eternal Logos. They are a Marian novena that points straight to the Incarnation. We honor the Theotokos, the God bearer, because through her the Word took flesh. And yes, you can bring your petitions to God. You can ask Him for what you need. But we do not treat God like a genie from a lamp who gives favors to those who finish a checklist. God is not a cosmic wish granter. He is the Lord of heaven and earth who already knows what we need before we even speak.
The real danger is this. People finish the nine days, do not receive the thing they wanted, then they get upset at God. Some even walk away from the Church because they think they “did their part” and God did not do His. That is not Catholic faith. That is treating the Mass like a vending machine.
So remember this clearly. Simbang Gabi is not a wish machine. It is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is the unbloody re-presentation of Calvary. It is the moment when Christ comes to us in the Eucharist. And receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion in a state of grace is already the greatest gift you will receive this Christmas. Nothing in the world can top that. That is the real heart of Simbang Gabi.
