A 2,700-year-old ancient temple has been found near the city of Jerusalem at the Tel Motza archaeological site.

The temple was uncovered while workers were making excavations for a new section of Highway 1 in Israel.

The site of Tel Motza has been linked to the ancient town of Mozah from the Book of Joshua in the Bible.

During past excavations at Tel Motza, archaeologists have found remains of what may have been a grain storage structure for the city of Jerusalem in the past.

They have also found several items nearby the temple site like pieces of pottery, ritualistic pedestals, and figurines of horses and human heads.

The directors of the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority said, "The ritual building at Tel Motza is an unusual and striking find, in light of the fact that there are hardly any remains of ritual buildings of the period in Judaea at the time of the First Temple. The uniqueness of the structure is even more remarkable because of the vicinity of the site... to the capital city of Jerusalem, which acted as the Kingdom's main sacred center at the time."
