Peruvian Bishop, 51, Resigns Amid Sex Scandal Allegations
The official Vatican notice states only that Leo XIV "accepted the resignation" without further elaboration.
Quispe’s departure follows a series of public sexual misconduct allegations.
In July 2024, the Apostolic Nunciature in Peru announced an Apostolic Visitation to the Prelature of Juli to "verify the situation".
A former female cook employed in the prelature had alleged that Bishop Quispe regularly received women in his residence. She was instructed to clean his bedroom, where she encountered evidence suggestive of intimate encounters: women’s clothes, stained bedsheets, and even used condoms.
She stated she discovered used condoms on four occasions.
The woman further claimed that Bishop Quispe had multiple sexual partners and named at least seven women. Some of these accomplices were women in religious life.
The media also circulated purported audio messages and video screenshots. In one audio, Monsignor Quispe addresses a woman as “mi gorda” (roughly “my darling”) and professes love, promising to find days to meet her.
A screenshot circulated of what was claimed to be a video call in which Quispe blew a kiss at a woman.
After the allegations went public, Bishop Quispe claimed that he was the target of a defamation campaign orchestrated by “dark hands.”
The Vatican has never released the findings of the Apostolic Visitation. Monsignor Quispe’s resignation is obviously tied to the outcome of the investigation.
